Travelling from Rabat and Fez to Moulay Idriss and Marrakech, she recorded her encounters with Morocco's peoples, traditions and ceremonies, capturing a country at a moment of transition from an almost unknown, roadless empire to a popular tourist destination. Her descriptions of the places she visited - mosques, palaces, ruins, markets and harems - are typically observant and brim with colour and spirit, whilst her sketches of the country's history and art are rigorous but accessible. Biografía del autor

Nació en Nueva York en 1862, en el seno de una familia acomodada. Educada con institutrices, abundantes lecturas y viajes al extranjero, se casó en 1885 y, en 1902, publicó su primera novela, The valley of decision, tras la que no dejaría de escribir hasta su muerte en 1937. Vivió en París a partir de 1907, donde acabaría estableciéndose. Durante la primera guerra mundial asumió arriesgadas tareas de ayuda a los aliados, por las que recibió, en 1915, la Legión de Honor. Reconocida en vida como la heredera de Henry James, Edith Wharton es hoy considerada como una de las grandes novelistas de la literatura norteamericana, autora de grandes títulos, entre sus cuarenta y seis libros de ensayo y ficción, como The House of Mirth (1905), Un hijo en el frente (1919), La edad de la inocencia (1920), y The Children (1928), títulos en los que destaca su maestría y su fina, pero no menos demoledora, sátira de los valores sociales establecidos.
