Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century's most enduring--and harrowing--works of fiction. Written several years after Conrad's grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who undertakes his own journey into the African jungle to find the tormented white trader Kurtz. Rich in irony and spellbinding prose, Heart of Darkness is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, and the thin line between civilization and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad's Congo Diary of 1890--the first notes, in effect, for the novel which was composed at the end of that decade.

p Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, más conocido como Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), fue un novelista polaco-británico. Siendo aún adolescente, se enroló como marinero en barcos franceses y británicos, experiencia que posteriormente le serviría de fuente de inspiración para sus novelas. Una vez retirado, inició su carrera como novelista con la publicación en 1895 de em La locura de Almayer /em , a la que seguirían títulos tan célebres como em El corazón de las tinieblas /em (1899) o em Lord Jim /em (1900), entre otros. Sus novelas, ambientadas en mares y países exóticos, profundizan en cuestiones como la fragilidad y la soledad humanas o el conflicto entre culturas.<br>
