Considered by Andre Gide to be one of the ten greatest novels in the French language, "Germinal" is a brutal depiction of the poverty and wretchedness of a mining community in northern France under the second empire. At the centre of the novel is Etienne Lantier, a handsome 21 year-old mechanic, intelligent but with little education and a dangerous predisposition to murderous, alcoholic rage. "Germinal" tells the parallel story of Etienne's refusal to accept what he appears destined to become, and of the miners' difficult decision to strike in order to fight for a better standard of life.

Emile ZOLA (1840-1902) est un écrivain et journaliste français. Considéré comme le chef de file du naturalisme, c'est des romanciers français les plus populaires, les plus publiés et traduits dans le monde entier.<br> Sa vie et son oeuvre ont fait l'objet de nombreuses études historiques.<br> Sur le plan littéraire, il est principalement connu pour sa fresque romanesque en 20 romans "Les Rougon-Macquart".<br> La fin de sa vie est marquée par son engagement dans l'affaire Dreyfus avec la publication en janvier 1898 dans le quotidien "l'Aurore" de l'article intitulé "J'accuse...!" qui lui a valu un procès en diffamation et un exil à Londres la même année.
