Nanda Gray, the daughter of a Catholic convert, is nine when she is sent to the Convent of Five Wounds. Quick-witted, resilient and eager to please, she accepts this closed world where, with all the enthusiasm of the outsider, her desires and passions become only those the school permits. Her only deviation from total obedience is the passionate friendships she makes.
Convent life is perfectly captured - the smell of beeswax and incense; the petty cruelties of the nuns; the eccentricities of Nanda's school friends.

Biografía del autor

p b Antonia White /b nació en Londres en 1899. Se educó en el Convento del Sagrado Corazón de Roehampton, del que fue expulsada al descubrir sus profesores una novelita suya que fue tachada injustamente de pecaminosa . Ese hecho, que motivó su fobia a la escritura, así como una esquizofrenia (a la que ella se refería como la Bestia ), marcarían su vida. Durante un año, en 1922, estuvo ingresada en el psiquiátrico de Bedlam. Fue actriz, periodista, redactora publicitaria y traductora. Se casó tres veces. Su primera novela, b i Helada en mayo /b /i (1933), se inspiró en su propia experiencia escolar. Su protagonista, Fernanda Nanda Grey, volvería en las novelas i The Lost Traveller /i (1950), i The Sugar House /i (1952) y i Beyond the Glass /i (1954). Antonia White falleció en 1980.<br>
