Frankenstein is the most famous novel by Mary Shelley: a dark parable of science misused. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but wayward scientist, builds a human from dead flesh. Horrified at what he has done, he abandons his creation.

The hideous creature learns language and becomes civilized but society rejects him. Spurned, he seeks vengeance on his creator. So begins a cycle of destruction, with Frankenstein and his 'monster' pursuing each other to the extremes of nature until all vestiges of their humanity are lost.

In 1831, Mary Shelley succumbed to conservative pressures and toned down elements of the work. The novel is presented here in its original form and with an afterword by David Pinching.

x{0026}lt;P x{0026}lt;B Mary Wollstonecraft Shelleyx{0026}lt;/B (1797-1851) fue la única hija de William Godwin y Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, dos pensadores progresistas que se encargaron de introducirla en los ambientes intelectuales. Con apenas catorce años, conoció al joven poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley y huyó con él a Francia. Convivieron por algún tiempo y cuando se suicidó la primera esposa del poeta, se casaron. El matrimonio, que duró ocho años, vivió en distintos países y formó parte del círculo de poetas románticos que frecuentaba lord Byron. A los veintiún años, Mary Shelley publicó su primera novela, x{0026}lt;I Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeox{0026}lt;/I (1818), que obtuvo un gran éxito. También es autora de las novelas x{0026}lt;I Lodore x{0026}lt;/I (1835), x{0026}lt;I Falkner x{0026}lt;/I (1837) y la futurista x{0026}lt;I El último hombrex{0026}lt;/I (1826), que escenifica el fin de la civilización en el siglo XXI.x{0026}lt;/P
