Bajo la influencia de Edgar Allan Poe -que lee en las traducciones de Baudelaire- empieza a interesarse por la escritura y la ciencia-ficción. En 1857 se casó con una joven viuda, madre de dos hijos. Ejerció de corredor de bolsa hasta la publicación, con gran éxito, de x{0026}lt;I Cinco semanas en globox{0026}lt;/I (1863), a la que seguirían obras como x{0026}lt;I Viajeal centro de la Tierrax{0026}lt;/I (1864); x{0026}lt;I Veinte mil leguas de viaje submarinox{0026}lt;/I (1869); x{0026}lt;I La vuelta al mundo en ochenta díasx{0026}lt;/I (1872), basada en el viaje del americano George Francis Train (1829-1904); x{0026}lt;I La isla misteriosax{0026}lt;/I (1874), y x{0026}lt;I La casa de vaporx{0026}lt;/I (1880). Compartió editor con Balzac y George Sand. A lo largo de su vida realizó muchos viajes que le sirvieron de inspiración para algunas de sus novelas, como su viaje a Estados Unidos o sus travesías a bordo de su propia embarcación.
