Thomas Mann (Lubeck, 1875-Zúrich, 2004) es uno de los escritores alemanes más relevantes en la historia de la literatura de esa lengua. Fue un pensador crítico y dejó una extensa obra en la que examina el espíritu del hombre europeo. Novelas como La montaña mágica, José y sus hermanos o Los Buddenbrook son clásicos traducidos a decenas de lenguas y estudiados en universidades de todo el mundo. Férreo opositor al nazismo, lo que le costó el exilio, defendió siempre la libertad como un ideal supremo. En 1929 recibió el premio Nobel de Literatura.
