ames' 1980 Notes of Dialectics: Hegel-Marx-Lenin is the first Marxist philosophical book written by a person of African descent, and stands as a crucial segment of the tradition known as Hegelian Marxist philosophy. In the first full-length study of it, McClendon (African American studies and American cultural studies, Bates College, Maine) finds that James does not counterpose Marxism as humanism to Marxism as science, but argues that the two aspects are adjoined in an integral, dialectical, manner with each other, and that neither can be understood without comprehending the other.
