In Cancin, Eduardo Halfons eponymous wanderer is invited to a Lebanese writers conference in Japan, where he reflects on his Jewish grandfathers multifaceted identity. To understand more about the cold, fateful day in January 1967 when his grandfather was abducted by Guatemalan guerillas, Halfon searches his childhood memories. Soon, chance encounters around the world lead to more clues about his grandfathers captors, including a butcher nicknamed Cancin (or song).

As a brutal and complex history emerges against the backdrop of the Guatemalan Civil War, Halfon finds echoes in the stories of a woman he meets in Japan whose grandfather survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Through exquisite prose and intricate storytelling, Halfon exposes the atrocities of war and the effect that silence and extreme violence have on family and identity.

Biografía del autor

Nació en Ciudad de Guatemala en 1971. Formado como ingeniero, abandonó temprano la profesión para dedicarse a la literatura. Su obra, de las más reconocibles en el panorama actual, ha sido traducida a más de quince idiomas. A la publicación de i Esto no es una pipa, Saturno, en 2003, le siguieron una veintena de libros de relatos y novelas, como i El boxeador polaco /i , i La pirueta /i , i Mañana nunca lo hablamos /i , i Monasterio /i , i Signor Hoffman /i , i Duelo /i , i Canción /i , i Un hijo cualquiera /i y i Tarántula /i . Ha recibido múltiples premios, como el Roger Caillois de Literatura Latinoamericana y el Médicis a la mejor novela extranjera ambos en Francia , el Nacional de Literatura, en Guatemala, y el Berman de Literatura, en Suecia. Actualmente vive en Berlín.
