En 1931 publicó, por primera vez con su propio nombre, x{0026}lt;I Pietr, el Letónx{0026}lt;/I , una novela que presentaba al imperturbable comisario de policía parisino Jules Maigret, personaje que retomó en novelas y relatos a lo largo de las cuatro décadas siguientes, mientras su obra más amplia iba forjando su reputación como uno de los escritores fundamentales del siglo.
