Nadine Gordimer, séptima mujer de nuestro siglo en ganar el Premio Nobel de Literatura 1991, nació en Sudáfrica en 1923, estudió letras en la Witwatersrand University de Johannesburgo y allá sigue viviendo hasta hoy, entregada exclusivamente a la literatura desde 1953, año en que publicó su primera novela. Recorrió ampliamente su propio continente, Europa y Estados Unidos, donde enseña regularmente largas temporadas en universidades como Harvard y Princeton. Se comprometió firmemente contra el apartheid, aunque, según confiesa ella misma, de haber vivido en otras circunstancias, la política no habría sido precisamente una de mis actividades favoritas" .
