Central to the Autobiography is Mill's moving account of the mental crisis he suffered as a young man, and his discovery of a world of feeling and emotion that drew him away from Benthamite utilitarianism and his father's ambitions for him and towards the Romantic radicalism of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Jane and Thomas Carlyle, Auguste Comte and Saint-Simon. The tension between thought and feeling, the struggle to improve the individual and society, preoccupied Mill all his life and imbue his Autobiography with enduring integrity and power.

(1806-1873) fue un pensador, político y economista británico a quien muchos consideran una de las figuras intelectuales más relevantes del XIX y de la tradición filosófica liberal. Bajo la tutela de Jeremy Bentham, que ejerció una influencia decisiva en su formación, Mill absorbió los principios del utilitarismo aunque posteriormente los matizaría y cuestionaría, y desarrolló una obra cuyo eje central es la defensa de la libertad individual frente a los abusos y las intromisiones ilegítimas de cualquier tipo de poder. Esa preocupación lo llevó a simpatizar con el movimiento feminista y, como diputado del Partido Liberal, se convirtió en el segundo parlamentario en toda la historia del Reino Unido que presentó una proposición para otorgar a las mujeres el derecho al sufragio.
