Biografía del autor

Poeta y ensayista nacida en Dublín, Lucy Grealy (1963-2002) se mudó con su familia a las afueras de Nueva York antes de cumplir los cinco años. A los nueve le fue diagnosticado un sarcoma de Ewing que obligó a extirparle parte de mandíbula y marcó su vida para siempre. Grealy se licenció en el Sarah Lawrence College, donde descubrió su amor por la poesía, y cursó el prestigioso Programa de Escritura Creativa de la Universidad de Iowa. A lo largo de su vida trabajó como profesora de escritura creativa y publicó el poemario Everyday alibis y el libro de ensayos As seen on TV: a provocation, ambos inéditos en español. Recibió varios premios por su labor poética, entre otros el premio de la Academia de Poetas Americanos que le concedieron en dos ocasiones. En 1991 obtuvo una beca del Radcliffe College para completar su libro de memorias Autobiografía de un rostro. El libro fue publicado en 1994 y galardonado con el premio Whiting. Tras someterse a nuevas intervenciones quirúrgicas que reavivaron su lucha contra el dolor, Lucy Grealy murió el 18 de diciembre de 2002 a consecuencia de una sobredosis de heroína. Tenía 39 años.
