Orphan Ana Cortez knows she's in trouble this time. She's just blown her last chance in a foster home; no one wants a 15 year old with authority issues. It's a group home after this, and Ana has heard enough stories to know that she doesn't want to end up there. But Lupe Saucedo, her social worker, has another idea. There's a farm in Northern California that's looking for someone to help on the farm in exchange for room and board. If Ana works hard this summer, she can stay for the school year and file for emancipation when she turns 16. Ana is dubious, but promises Mrs. Saucedo she's give it a shot. For a kid who's spent her entire life in East L.A., the lush farmland of NorCal could be another planet. Ana can't tell a tomato plant from a blackberry bush, but she's always been a hard worker. If she can just keep her head down, she can make it until her 16th birthday.
Abbie Garber knows that her brother Emmett will take some time to get used to the idea of Ana. He was dubious about the farm trainee program anyway, and a girl was certainly not what he was expecting. But the farm needs help, and Abbie wants to give Ana a chance. Did she perhaps forget to mention to Emmett that their trainee is a 15 year old girl? Well, she was busy in the herb garden.
