Nació en Cincinnati (Ohio) pero pasó sus primeros años en California. Se licenció en literatura inglesa en la universidad de Stanford y en 1990 publicó x{0026}lt;I A home at the end of the Worldx{0026}lt;/I , su primera novela, cuya adaptación cinematográfica corrióa cargo de Michael Mayer. En 1995 publicó x{0026}lt;I De carne y huesox{0026}lt;/I , su segunda novela, y en 1999 recibió el Premio Pulitzer por x{0026}lt;I Las horasx{0026}lt;/I , una novela que tenía como protagonista a Virginia Woolf y que fue llevada al cine con gran éxito, gracias también al buen trabajo de Nicole Kidman y Meryl Streep.
