Nació con el nombre de Dorothy Karen Mueller en Baltimore, Maryland, en 1949. Desempeñó los más diversos oficios dentro del ambiente artístico y, sobre todo, fuera de él. Es recordada por su participación en cuatro de las más célebres películas de John Waters; fue modelo y amiga cercana de la fotógrafa Nan Goldin, y tuvo escarceos con el columnismo, el teatro y el baile. Murió en Nueva York, en 1989, por complicaciones relacionadas con el sida. La mayor parte de su obra literaria ha sido publicada póstumamente.
