Iris Murdoch's first novel is set in a part of London where struggling writers rub shoulders with successful bookies, and film starlets with frantic philosophers. Its hero, Jake Donaghue, is a drifting, clever, likeable young man who makes a living out of translation work and sponging on his friends. A meeting with Anna, an old flame, leads him into a series of fantastic adventures.

Jake is captivated by a majestic philosopher, Hugo Belfounder, whose profound and inconclusive reflections give the book its title - under the net of language.

x{0026}lt;P x{0026}lt;B Iris Murdochx{0026}lt;/B nació en Dublín en 1919. Estudió en la Badminton School de Bristol y posteriormente se licenció en lenguas clásicas por la Universidad de Oxford. En Cambridge estudió filosofía, materia que a partir de 1948 impartiría en Oxford, donde vivió la mayor parte de su vida. En 1956 se casó con John Bayley. Murió el 8 de febrero de 1999, tras sufrir una larga enfermedad. Su extensa obra abarca novela, ensayo, poesía y teatro.
