x{0026}lt;P Cicely Isabel Fairfield (1892-1983), más conocida como x{0026}lt;B Rebecca Westx{0026}lt;/B , fue una de las figuras más destacadas de las letras inglesas, y una de las intelectuales de mayor proyección pública del siglo XX. Sufragista, escribió vigorosos artículos políticos y de crítica literaria en la prensa liberal de los años 1910-1930. De inteligencia tan lúcida como poderosa, siempre mantuvo una absoluta independencia de criterio y un estricto sentido ético. Sus libros le dieron fama y fortuna, viajó mucho y tuvo amistad con destacadas personalidades como George Bernard Shaw o Charles Chaplin -con el que tuvo un breve romance-. Visceralmente anticomunista y antifascista, apoyó a la República durante la Guerra Civil española, y denunció incansablemente todos los totalitarismos. Vivió una larga y tormentosa relación con el novelista H. G. Wells (1866-1946), con quien tuvo un hijo.x{0026}lt;/P
