Profesor de Arqueología en la Universidad de Viena, está especializado en la datación por radiocarbono de yacimientos arqueológicos mediante espectrometría de masas con aceleradores. Durante muchos años ha trabajado en el Paleolítico, en particular en la aparición del Homo sapiens y en su posterior interacción con los neandertales y otros tipos de humanos.
