Sebastian Haffner nació en Berlín, donde cursó estudios de Derecho. En 1938, considerándose una víctima aria del nazismo, emigró a Inglaterra, donde trabajó como periodista para The Observer. En 1954 regresó a Alemania. Hasta su muerte colaboró en los más prestigiosos periódicos alemanes. Entre sus libros destacan una biografía de Churchill y De Bismark a Hitler.
