A fourteen-year-old girl plans to become 'a virago', until her mother intercepts her first tryst by dressing up as her male lover.

A boy of the same age is lured into the forest by his father's mistress. A woman of forty falls in love and longs to kill herself, so unbearable is the return of the youth she thought she wanted. 'Alice', she tells herself, 'be a man.'Barnes makes gender and desire seem slippery and joyful - and makes the fictional Lydia Steptoe seem like a writer for our time.

Biografía del autor

Djuna Barnes nació en Cornwall-on-Hudson (Nueva York) en 1892 y murió en Nueva York en 1982. Radicada en París en los años de entreguerras, frecuentó a las principales figuras del arte y la literatura de la época, desde Charles Chaplin y Marcel Duchamp hasta James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pond, Eugene O'Neill, Samuel Beckett, Alexis Carrel o Ernest Hemingway. Es autora de la novela Ryder y de la obra teatral en verso Antiphon además de diversos volúmenes de poesía, ensayo y miscelánea.
