Marguerite Duras nació en la Indochina francesa en 1914 y murió en París en 1996. En 1932 se trasladó a París, donde estudió derecho, matemáticas y ciencias políticas. En 1943 publicó su primera obra, La impudicia, a la que seguirían más de veinte novelas, guiones de cine y textos dramáticos. Entre sus obras destacan Moderato cantabile, El vicecónsul, El arrebato de Lol V. Stein, Los ojos azules pelo negro, Emily L., Los caballitos de Tarquinia, El amor, Destruir, dice, El amante de la China del Norte y Un dique contra el Pacífico. Tras una profunda crisis, marcada por el alcoholismo, escribió El hombre sentado en el pasillo, El mal de la muerte y El amante, célebre novela merecedora del premio Goncourt en 1984.
