Laurence Sterne nació en 1713 en la ciudad de Clonmel (Irlanda). Cuando murió su padre, en 1731, se le envió a estudiar a Cambridge. Fue allí donde sufrió los primeros síntomas de la tuberculosis, que lo aquejarán a lo largo de toda su vida. Acabados los estudios, se ordenó sacerdote de la Iglesia anglicana y obtuvo la vicaría de Sutton-in-the-Forest, cerca de York. Su condición de clérigo no le impidió llevar una vida licenciosa y festiva, y leer a Rabelais, Cervantes y Burton en casa de su amigo John Hall-Stevenson. En 1741 se casó con Elizabeth Lumley. Las relaciones con su esposa nunca fueron buenas. Ella enloqueció en 1758. Sterne no se reveló como escritor hasta 1759, cuando tenía casi cuarenta y seis años. Ese año publicó A Political Romance, un panfleto satírico que causó gran escándalo. Ese mismo año comenzó a publicar la que es considerada su obra magna, Vida y opiniones del caballero Tristram Shandy. En 1766 conoció a Eliza Draper, una joven casada de la que se enamoró locamente y a la que dedicará casi toda su obra posterior. En 1767 comenzó la escritura de Viaje sentimental. El libro se publicó en febrero de 1768, y, pocas semanas después, el 18 de marzo de 1768, a causa de las complicaciones de una gripe, murió de pleuresía.
