The morning after Jonathan Parrishs fortieth birthday party, the guest of honor is found lying dead in a pool of his own blood. Police arrive at the scene to find his older brother, Ralph, covered in red and clutching the murder weapon.

From behind bars, Ralph insists he didnt do it. He claims he heard a scream from the other room, saw a man dressed in black running away, and rushed to pull the fatal blade from Jonathans chest. But his explanations dont sway the Florida police, especially when several witnesses saw the brothers arguing about Jonathans homosexual lifestyle the night before.

But attorney Matthew Hope believes Ralph'call it instinct, call it a hunch, Matts law partner, Frank Summerville, calls it Matts 'code.' But with Frank too distraught over his crumbling marriage to pitch in this time, Matthew enlists private eye Warren Chambers to help prove Ralphs innocence. And with few clues to go by, the duo will have to dig through a world of closet cases, secret trysts, and a community on edge to capture the real killer.

Ed McBain fue el más famoso de los seudónimos que utilizó Evan Hunter (Nueva York, 1926- Weston, 2005) para escribir sus novelas. Trabajó como editor en una agencia especializada en representar a autores de relatos para revistas, donde empezó a escribir cuentos cortos de ciencia ficción. McBain/Hunter siempre ha tenido una buena relación con el cine: no sólo varias de sus novelas se han adaptado a la gran pantalla ("Semilla de maldad", "Un extraño en mi vida", etc.), sino que además ha escrito varios guiones, entre los que destaca el de "Los pájaros", de Alfred Hitchcock.
