The magisterial and enigmatic figure of Charles V, Emperor of Europe and the New World, is the central figure in the second volume of Hugh Thomas's great history of the Spanish Empire. It begins with the return of the remnants of Magellan's expedition around the world in 1522 and ends with Charles's death in 1558. In the decades between, the Spanish conquer Guatemala, Yucatan, Columbia, Venezuela, Peru and Chile, and control the banks of the might River Plate.

About all of these Hugh Thomas writes vividly, conveying the conquerors' almost disbelieving sense of what they were achieving. The discovery and subjugation of so many native peoples raised enormous controversy within Spain about how they should be treated, a debate Thomas explores perceptively, with an eye for resonances which lasted for centuries. Hugh Thomas brings alive one of the most extraordinary and influential moments in High Renaissance and world history.

Biografía del autor

Hugh Thomas nació en Windsor en 1931, estudió en la Universidad de Cambridge y en la Sorbona, y fue profesor de la Academia Real Militar de Sandhurst y de la Universidad de Reading. En 1961 se dio a conocer internacionalmente con su libro La guerra civil española, que tuvo una gran resonancia y se tradujo a numerosos idiomas; le siguieron Cuba: la lucha por la libertad (3 volúmenes), Goya y el 3 de mayo de 1808, Paz armada, Una historia inacabada del mundo y La conquista de México, publicado, con gran éxito de crítica y público, por Editorial Planeta. En 1981 fue nombrado par (lord Thomas de Swynnerton). Murió en Londres en 2017.
