Biografía del autor

Franz Werfel, Novelista, poeta y dramaturgo austriaco de religión judía. Nació en Praga en 1890 (por entonces parte del imperio Austrohúngaro). Estudió en el Carolinum de Praga y sirvió en el ejército austriaco durante la I Guerra Mundial.Hasta 1938 vivió en Viena dedicado a la literatura, pero debido a la expansión nazi y por su condición de judío tuvo que huir a Francia. Durante su estancia en este país visitó el santuario de Lourdes donde recibió ayuda por parte de los católicos que atienden el santuario, a los que prometió escribir sobre esta experiencia. Más tarde cuando Francia fue ocupada consiguió huir a Estados Unidos, donde en 1941 publicó La canción de Bernadette, que fue llevada al cine en 1943 con extraordinario éxito por el director Henry King. Werfel falleció en Los Ángeles en 1945.
