Newland Archer, heir to one of New York City's best families, is planning a proper marriage, a perfect product of New York society. One night he meets May's cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska. Biografía del autor

(Nueva York, 1862 - Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, Francia, 1937) Nació en el seno de una familia acomodada. Se casó con un aristócrata doce años mayor que ella, del que acabó divorciándose. Fue una mujer muy independiente para su época, viajó sola por todo el continente europeo y realizó largas estancias en París. En 1907 se estableció definitivamente en la capital francesa, donde se convirtió en amiga de Henry James. Fue la primera mujer en ganar un premio Pulitzer, que obtuvo por La edad de la inocencia (1920). Las novelas breves que reunió en el volumen titulado The Old New York (1924), entre las cuales El día de Año Nuevo y La solterona, publicadas en esta misma colección, retratan las costumbres de la alta sociedad en la época dorada de la ciudad, en la que las apariencias eran sumamente importantes.
