Kami Garcia vive en Los Ángeles con su marido, su hijo y su hija, pero pasó su niñez en las afueras de Washington DC (aunque asegura que siempre tuvo un pie en el sur). Estudió en la George Washington University, donde se licenció en Educación. Es profesora y organiza grupos de lecturas para niños y jóvenes. Comenzó a escribir en diarios durante su niñez. Confiesa ser muy supersticiosa y va siempre cargada de amuletos.
