Set in post-war Switzerland, Fleur Jaeggy's novel begins simply and innocently enough: At fourteen I was a boarder in a school in the Appenzell'. But there is nothing truly simple or innocent here. With the offhanded knowingness of a remorseless young Eve, the narrator describes life as a captive of the school and her designs to win the affections of the seemingly perfect new girl, Frederique.

As she broods over her schemes as well as on the nature of control and madness, the novel gathers a suspended, unsettling energy.

Biografía del autor

Fleur Jaeggy, premio Gotffried Keller 2024, nació en Zúrich, vivió en Roma y París, y en la actualidad reside en Milán. Figura internacionalmente reconocida, sus obras han sido traducidas a numerosas lenguas. Es autora de las novelas El dedo en la boca (1968), El ángel de la guarda (1971), Las estatuas de agua (1980), Los hermosos años del castigo (1989, Premio Bagutta 1990, Premio Bocaccio Europa 1994) y Proleterka (2001, Premio Vailate Alderigo Sala 2001 y Donna Città di Roma 2001, Premio Viareggio 2002 y Libro del Año 2003 por el Times Literary Supplement), así como de los volúmenes de relatos El temor del cielo (1994, Premio Moravia 1994) y El último de la estirpe (2014, Premio Giuseppe Tomasi de Lampedusa 2015).
