The Blythes are a big, warm, rambunctious family who live on a small farm and sometimes foster children. Now Prez has come to live with them. But, though he seems cheerful and helpful, he never says a word.

Then one day Prez answers the door to someone claiming to be his relative. This small, loud stranger carries a backpack, walks with a swagger and goes by the name of Sputnik. As Prez dithers on the doorstep, Sputnik strolls right past him and introduces himself to everyone in the household.

Prez is amazed at the response. The family pat Sputnik on the head, call him a good boy and drop food into his mouth. It seems they all think Sputnik is a dog.

It's only Prez who thinks otherwise. But Prez soon finds himself having to defend the family from the chaos and danger unleashed by Sputnik, as household items come to life - like a TV remote that fast-forwards people: 'Anyone can do it, it's just that people don't read the instructions properly'; and a toy lightsaber that entertains guests at a children's party, until one of them is nearly decapitated by it - and Prez is going to have to use his voice to explain himself. It turns out that Sputnik is writing a guidebook to Earth called Ten Things Worth Doing on Earth, and he takes Prez on a journey to discover just those ten things.

Each adventure seems to take Prez nearer to the heart of the family he is being fostered by. But they also take him closer to the day that he is due to leave them forever ...

Biografía del autor

El escritor y guionista Frank Cottrel-Boyce nació en 1959 en la localidad inglesa de Rainhill, en el seno de una familia católica de origen irlandés. Se graduó y doctoró en lengua y literatura inglesa por la Universidad de Oxford y, antes que guionista, Cottrell-Boyce escribió reseñas para la revista Living Marxism. Conocer al director de cine Michael Winterbottom y entablar amistad con él en los 90, supuso un antes y un después en su carrera. Juntos han colaborado en diversas películas con guión de Cottrell-Boyce, dos de las cuales, Welcome to Sarajevo y 24 Hour Party People fueron nominadas a la Palma de Oro del Festival de Cannes. Sus guiones también han sido llevados a la gran pantalla por otros directores de prestigio como Danny Boyle (Millions), Anand Tucker y Alex Cox, entre otros, y ha estado nominado a los Premios BAFTA y Satellite. Asimismo, ha escrito para televisión y teatro antes de dedicar su talento a la literatura infantil y juvenil. Su primer libro infantil, publicado en 2004, fue una adaptación de su propio guión cinematográfico de Millions, y supuso un rotundo éxito con el que obtuvo la Medalla Carnegie, premio que reconoce al mejor libro infantil del año en el Reino Unido, y al que ha optado en otras dos ocasiones como finalista con su segunda novela, Framed (2005), y con Cosmic (2009), libro que también fue nominado al Guardian Children's Fiction Prize y al Roald Dahl Funny Prize. A lo largo de los años su trabajo ha sido reconocido en otros certámenes, tanto en el Reino Unido como en Alemania y Francia. Otros títulos infantiles en su bibliografía son: The unforgotten coat (2011), y la serie de libros de Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, continuaciones del clásico de Ian Fleming. Desde 2012 es profesor en la Universidad Hope de Liverpool, año en el que alcanzó fama mundial al escribir el guión de la ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres junto a Danny Boyle. Al año siguiente, Cottrell-Boyce fue nombrado Doctor Honoris Causa por la Edge Hill University. En la actualidad, reside y trabaja en Liverpool junto a su esposa y siete hijos.
