Escribe tanto en japonés, su lengua materna, como en alemán. Ha publicado novelas, cuentos, piezas teatrales y ensayos, y ha recibido numerosos galardones, como el Premio Akutagawa, el Tanizaki, el Adelbert von Chamisso y la Medalla Goethe.
