En 1975, fundó Microsoft junto a su amigo de la infancia Paul Allen y en la actualidad es presidente de la Gates Foundation. También es fundador de Breakthrough Energy, un proyecto cuyo objetivo es comercializar energías limpias y otras tecnologías relacionadas con el cambio climático, y de TerraPower, una empresa que invierte en el desarrollo de tecnología nuclear de vanguardia.
