In Permanent Red, John Berger argues that the contemporary artist should strive for a realism that aims for hope, to transform the world. Surveying the work of historical artists as well as that of near contemporaries such as Picasso, Léger and Matisse, he explores the role of the artist, dividing these figures into those that struggle, those that fail, and the true masters. He explains why we should study the work of the past: in order to understand the present and to rethink the future.

First published in 1960, Permanent Red established John Berger as a firebrand critic willing to broadcast controversial opinions on some of the most important British artists of the day, including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

x{0026}lt;P x{0026}lt;B John Bergerx{0026}lt;/B (Londres, 1926-París, 2017) se formó como pintor en la Central School of Arts. Además de un gran escritor -con x{0026}lt;I G.x{0026}lt;/I (Alfaguara, 1994, 2012) obtuvo en 1972 el Premio Booker-, ha sido uno de los pensadores más influyentes de los últimos años. Autor de novelas, ensayos, obras de teatro, películas, colaboraciones fotográficas y performances, ninguna manifestación artística ha escapado a su talento. Sus ensayos y artículos revolucionaron la manera de entender las Bellas Artes, y su compromiso con el campesinado europeo en la trilogía x{0026}lt;I De sus fatigasx{0026}lt;/I , compuesta por x{0026}lt;I Puerca tierra, Una vez en Europax{0026}lt;/I y x{0026}lt;I Lila y Flagx{0026}lt;/I , es ya un modelo de empatía y lucidez.
