No one sleeps in Alexandria

This sweeping novel depicts the intertwined lives of an assortment of Egyptians-Muslims and Copts, northerners and southerners, men and women--as they begin to settle in Egypt's great second city, and explores how the Second World War, starting in supposedly faraway Europe, comes crashing down on them, affecting their lives in fateful ways. Central to the novel is the story of a striking friendship between Sheikh Magd al-Din, a devout Muslim with peasant roots in northern Egypt, and Dimyan, a Copt with roots in southern Egypt, in their journey of survival and self-discovery. Woven around this narrative are the stories of other characters, in the city, in the villages, or in the faraway desert, closer to the fields of combat. And then there is the story of Alexandria itself, as written by history, as experienced by its denizens, and as touched by the war. Throughout, the author captures the cadences of everyday life in the Alexandria of the early 1940s, and boldly explores the often delicate question of religious differences in depth and on more than one level. No One Sleeps in Alexandria adds an authentically Egyptian vision of Alexandria to the many literary-but mainly Western-Alexandrias we know already: it may be the same space in which Cavafy, Forster, and Durrell move but it is certainly not the same world.

Biografía del autor

Ibrahim Abdel Meguid nació en 1946 en Alejandría (Egipto). Se licenció en Filosofía y Letras por la Universidad de Alejandría en 1973. Ese mismo año se trasladó a El Cairo para trabajar en el Ministerio de Cultura, y allí es donde vive desde entonces. Durante los años 70, militó en un partido comunista prohibido por aquel entonces, y a pesar de haber sufrido el encarcelamiento, su compromiso y activismo político nunca han cesado.<br><br>A lo largo de su carrera literaria, ha combinado y combina principalmente dos facetas de la escritura: la crítica y la creativa. Poco después de licenciarse en Filosofía, publicó su primera novela y pronto pasó a ocupar el cargo de Asesor de Asuntos Culturales de la Consejería de Cultura Popular de 1976 hasta 1982. Fue asimismo miembro del consejo editor del Consejo Egipcio del Libro (1985-1990) y director de la Consejería de Cultura Popular de 1990 a 1995. Estuvo al frente de la colección Kitabat yadida de 1995 hasta el año 2000.<br><br>Ha escrito numerosas novelas y cuentos, que lo han consagrado como uno de los autores más conocidos y respetados de Egipto. En 1996 obtuvo el Premio Naguib Mahfuz otorgado por la Universidad Americana de El Cairo por su novela Al-balda al-ujra (El otro país). En este mismo año obtuvo el premio a la mejor novela en la Feria Internacional del Libro de El Cairo por su novela La ahada yanam fi l-Iskandaría (Nadie duerme en Alejandría). En 2004 fue galardonado con el Premio de Excelencia Literaria otorgado por el Estado Egipcio.<br><br>Sus obras han sido traducidas al inglés, al francés y al alemán.
