On a cool summer evening in 1977, Mayumi Inaba hears a forlorn cry carried by the breeze off Tokyo's Tamagawa River. She follows the sound to the riverbank and finds a newborn kitten only the size of her palm dangling from a fence, abandoned. Overcome by tender affection, she takes the cat back to the small apartment she shares with her husband and christens her Mii: so begins an ineffable bond.

Over the next twenty years, we follow Inaba, a poet and novelist by moonlight, as she pursues quiet, solitude, and a room of her own.

Through it all, her cat, a fiercely independent creature in her own right, is her confidante and muse.

Biografía del autor

Inaba Mayumi (1950-2014). Debutó como escritora de ficción en 1973, cuando ganó el Premio para las Jóvenes Escritoras con el cuento Aoi kage no itami El dolor de una sombra azul . En 1981 publicó su primer volumen de cuentos, Hoteru Zanbia Hotel Zambia , y desde entonces compaginó su trabajo como editora con la escritura de ficción y la lírica. En 2008 ganó el Premio Kawabata por el cuento Miru , y en 2010 fue galardonada con el Premio MEXT de las Artes por la colección de relatos del mismo nombre. Posteriormente, con La península de las veinticuatro estaciones , se alzó con el más prestigioso de los galardones literarios japoneses: el Premio Tanizaki. Muy conocida en Japón por su amor a los gatos, también publicó Veinte años con mi gata , un libro de memorias en el que comparte sus vivencias con su gata Mi.
