Louisa May Alcott (Germantown, Filadelfia, 1832 - Boston, 1888) Hija de un maestro utópico, defensor del abolicionismo, del sufragio femenino y de la reforma de la educación, Louisa May Alcott empezó a trabajar siendo muy joven como maestra, costurera, institutriz, enfermera y escritora; su primer libro fue Flower Fables (1855), unos cuentos originariamente escritos para la hija de Ralph Waldo Emerson. El éxito le llegó a raíz de la publicación de Mujercitas (1868), un relato semiautobiográfico de su infancia y juventud junto a sus hermanas en Concord, Massachusetts, pero también fue autora de folletines con elementos góticos, que fueron muy leídas en su época.
