We are with her during the mesmerizing debut of "Strange Fruit"; with her as she rubs shoulders with the biggest movie stars and musicians of the day (Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and more); and with her through the scrapes with Jim Crow, spats with Sarah Vaughan, ignominious jailings, and tragic decline. All of this is told in Holiday's tart, streetwise style and hip patois that makes it read as if it were written yesterday.

Nació en Baltimore en 1915. Mamá y papá eran un par de críos cuando se casaron. Él tenía dieciocho años, ella dieciséis y yo tres , escribe la propia Billie. Debutó en Nueva York a los catorce años y grabó su primer disco en 1933. Formó parte de los grupos del pianista Teddy Wilson y de las orquestas de Count Basie y Artie Shaw. A partir de 1939 actuó como solista. Realizó dos giras por Europa, en 1954 y en 1958. Su fraseo voluptuoso y su libertad rímica estuvieron muy influidos por Lester Young, el saxofonista con cuyo estilo se ajustaba perfectamente su voz ronca y áspera. Después de los años de fama en los que vendió millones de discos, falleció en la más absoluta soledad el 17 de julio de 1959, en la misma cama del Metropolitan Hospital de Nueva York donde estaba detenida por posesión ilegal de drogas. Lady Sings the Blues sirvió de base a la película del mismo título (1972) protagonizada por Diana Ross.
