Dorothy Gladys Smith x{0026} x02014;conocida como Dodie Smithx{0026} x02014; nació en 1896 en Lancashire, pero cuando aún era un bebé, la temprana muerte de su padre hizo que su madre y ella se instalaran en casa de sus abuelos maternos en Mánchester, donde creció. En 1910, cuando tenía catorce años, su madre se volvió a casar y se mudaron a Londres. En 1914 Dodie ingresó en la Real Academia de Arte Dramático, donde empezó su carrera como actriz, que no prosperaría. En 1923 empezó a trabajar en los almacenes Heals vendiendo muebles y juguetes. Su primera obra de teatro, Autumn Crocus (1931), publicada bajo el seudónimo de C. L. Anthony, obtuvo un éxito inmediato e inauguró su carrera como escritora, guionista y periodista. Después de casarse con un empleado de Heals, Alec Beesley, el matrimonio se mudó a Estados Unidos en los años cuarenta debido a los problemas legales de Alec por ser objetor de conciencia. Fue allí donde trabó amistad con el escritor Christopher Isherwood y escribió su primera novela, Capturo el castillo (1948).
