Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus, widely known as Frankenstein, is a pioneering work, considered the originator of science fiction. Published in 1818 and set in the tradition of the Gothic novel, it explores contemporary themes such as the morality of science, eternal life, and mans relationship with God. Frankenstein is written in an epistolary format, which achieves great realism and closeness with the reader. The story is set in 18th century Europe, during a time of scientific fervor. The captain of a whaling ship writes to his sister Margaret about his adventures and his encounter with the ominous scientist Victor Frankenstein, who, in search of the secret of life and without measuring the consequences, creates a new being from parts of other dead human beings.

Mary Shelley (Londres, 1797x{0026} x02013; 1851) fue hija de dos figuras destacadas del pensamiento ilustrado: la filósofa Mary Wollstonecraft y el político William Godwin. Criada en un entorno de ideas radicales, conoció muy joven al poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley, con quien escapó a Europa y mantuvo una relación intensa y trágica. En 1816, durante una estancia en Suiza con Lord Byron, concibió Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo, que publicaría de forma anónima dos años después. Autora también de novelas como Valperga, El último hombre o Falkner, Mary Shelley fue editora de la obra de su esposo y una voz singular del romanticismo inglés. Su obra mayor, Frankenstein, combina ciencia, mito y emoción con una profundidad que la ha convertido en un clásico universal.
