Es una galardonada autora y etnógrafa que ha pasado los últimos treinta años estudiando las experiencias vividas en el socialismo y postsocialismo en Europa del Este. Se ha especializado en el estudio de la vida cotidiana bajo el socialismo y el postsocialismo, los efectos de género de las transformaciones posteriores a la Guerra Fría y el examen etnográfico de la memoria y la nostalgia en Europa del Este.
