Elizabeth von Arnim (de soltera Mary Annette Beauchamp) nació en 1866 en Sídney, Australia. Prima de la escritora Katherine Mansfield, al terminar sus estudios en Inglaterra, conoció a un viudo barón alemán, Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, en un viaje a Italia que hizo junto con supadre. Dos años después, cuando tenía veinticuatro, se casó con el barón Von Arnim y se estableció en sus propiedades en Pomerania. Aunque el matrimonio nunca funcionó por culpa de las constantes infidelidades del barón, no se separaron y tuvieron cinco hijos. Elizabeth se refugió de la infelicidad de su matrimonio entregándose a la escritura. Su primera novela, Elizabeth y su jardín alemán (1898), fue un éxito inmediato. En 1910, el barón Von Arnim murió y Elizabeth se mudó con sus hijos a Suiza, donde empezó una relación amorosa con H.G. Wells. Sin embargo, al descubrir que este le era infiel con la escritora Rebecca West, Elizabeth volvió a Londres. Allí se casó con John Francis Russell, hermano del filósofo Bertrand Russell; no tardaron en separarse, aunque nunca se divorciaron. De este desastroso matrimonio, nació Vera, cuya salida a la luz (publicado anónimamente) suscitó mucha polémica. Era el año 1921. A partir de entonces, Elizabeth von Arnim pasó temporadas viviendo en Estados Unidos y Suiza, hasta que murió víctima de una gripe en 1941, en Carolina del Sur.
