Joanne Harris nació en Yorkshire en 1964. Su madre era francesa y su padre inglés, con lo cual siempre sintió que formaba parte de ambas culturas. Intentó ser bajista de jazz y trabajó como contable, pero aceptó la tradición familiar y se dedicó a la enseñanza.
