Jane Austen (1775-1817) fue una novelista inglesa cuya habilidad para dotar de comicidad a sus historias hace que sus novelas, muy románticas, hayan acabado por convertirse en clásicos de la literatura inglesa y alcanzado a un público amplio, que va mucho más allá del académico. Escribió seis novelas (Sentido y sensibilidad, Orgullo y prejuicio, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasión y La abadía de Northanger), diversos relatos cortos y algunas historias que quedaron inacabadas. En la actualidad su obra sigue siendo tanto o más popular de lo que lo fue en vida de la autora.
