Es conocido tanto por sus investigaciones académicas como por su capacidad para divulgar la historia del antiguo Egipto al gran público. /span

Fue investigador en Egiptología en el Christs College de Cambridge (1993-1997) y en la Universidad de Durham (1997-1999).
