John Updike (Shillington, Pennsylvania, 1932-Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, 2009) es uno de los grandes maestros de la narrativa norteamericana contemporánea, autor de una vasta obra que abarca poesía y ensayo, narración breve y novela. Galardonado en dos ocasiones con el Premio Pulitzer (1982 y 1991) y en una con el American Book Award (1982), se le considera uno de los más ácidos cronistas de la sociedad estadounidense de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Tusquets Editores ha publicado un total de diecinueve obras de este autor, entre ellas Un libro de Bech, el primer título de la trilogía protagonizada por el mordaz y tierno alter ego apenas disimulado del propio Updike. En esta segunda entrega, Bech trastea por la vida como bien puede, cargado de miedos y dudas, pero también de un sentido del humor que lo hace todo más llevadero.
