W. Somerset Maugham
(París, 1874 Niza, 1965). Es uno de los escritores más relevantes y prolíficos de la narrativa inglesa de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Supo reflejar como nadie el final del Imperio británico y relató los últimos días del colonialismo en la India, el Sudeste Asiático, China y el Pacífico. Compaginó su extensa carrera literaria con trabajos tan curiosos como el de espía para los servicios secretos británicos o el de guionista para estudios de Hollywood. Publicada en 1921, Lluvia ha tenido varias adaptaciones cinematográficas. Las más conocidas son la de 1932, con Joan Crawford, y la de 1953, con Rita Hayworth.
