Agatha Christie es conocida en todo el mundo como la Dama del Crimen. Es la autora más publicada de todos los tiempos, tan solo superada por la Biblia y Shakespeare, con más de cuatro mil millones de ejemplares vendidos. Autora de un total de ochenta novelas de misterio y colecciones de relatos breves, diecinueve obras de teatro y seis novelas escritas con el pseudónimo de Mary Westmacott, probó suerte con la pluma mientras trabajaba en un hospital durante la primera guerra mundial, y debutó con El misterioso caso de Styles en 1920, cuyo protagonista es el legendario detective Hércules Poirot, que luego aparecería en treinta y tres libros más. Alcanzó la fama con El asesinato de Roger Ackroyd en 1926, y creó a la ingeniosa Miss Marple en Muerte en la vicaría, publicado por primera vez en 1930. Se casó dos veces, una con Archibald Christie, de quien adoptó el apellido con el que es conocida mundialmente, y más tarde con el arqueólogo Max Mallowan, al que acompañó en varias expediciones a enclaves exóticos que usó como escenarios en sus novelas. En 1961 fue nombrada miembro de la Real Sociedad de Literatura y en 1971 recibió el título de Dama de la Orden del Imperio Británico, un título nobiliario que en aquellos días se concedía con poca frecuencia. Murió en 1976 a la edad de ochenta y cinco años.
