John Gwynne estudió y fue profesor en la Universidad de Brighton. Ha tocado el bajo doble en un grupo de rock y viajado por Estados Unidos y Canadá. Está casado, tiene cuatro hijos y vive en Eastbourne, donde pertenece a una asociación que realiza recreaciones de la civilización vikinga. Cuando no está escribiendo es habitual encontrarlo en un muro de escudos rodeado por sus hijos.
